The Truth About Keyword Density

I admit it.

I bought into that whole keyword density idea like everyone else.

But guess what I just discovered?

Keyword density is a myth!

Don’t believe me?

Conduct your own experiment, like I did.

Go to Google or any search engine, and type in your primary keyword phrase.

Now examine the results that fall into the number one through twenty positions.

Now you tell me, do those sites all have the same keyword density?

No they don’t.

Some have higher keyword density, some have lower keyword density.

And I suspect, if you examined results 21 thru 40, you’d find exactly the same thing – no set pattern, no formula.

So what does all of this mean?

It means there is no such thing as a keyword density formula.

It’s a myth.

How do I know?

Because keyword stuffing is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

Everybody’s doing it. Yet everybody doesn’t have success getting their website to rank high in the search engines.

Why? Because keyword stuffing simply doesn’t work.

If it did, every website that utilized the technique of keyword stuffing would rank high in the search engines.

And we know that’s not the case.

No. A search engines algorithms are much more sophisticated than that – more complicated.

There are many other deciding factors involved that no one knows about.

So what does work?

Relevancy. It’s always been about relevancy – at least when it comes to Google. And let’s be honest.

When it comes to search engine traffic, Google is King!

Simply write relevant content that has a nice natural flow to it, sprinkle in a few keywords here and there and don’t worry about it.

If your website is more relevant than everyone else’s, it will rank higher than everyone else’s.

It’s as simple as that!

Why Website Traffic Is So Important

If you own or run a website, you probably already know that attracting visitors is much more difficult than creating the actual website. This is why most websites struggle to turn a profit and eventually fail. You can have the greatest looking site in the world, but without traffic, is there any point?

So you might ask “how do I get visitors to my website?” There are countless self-proclaimed “gurus” on the Web that would like you to believe there is a secret formula for generating traffic, and that only they have this “secret”. For a price, they will share their secret with you and the traffic floodgates will magically open. If only it were this easy … we’d all be rich!

There are only two important factors that will determine whether your site ranks well at the search engines; Content and Links. Sure, there are numerous other factors that play a role as well, such as keyword density, meta tags, etc. But the two main aspects of Internet marketing that you must focus on and understand better than anything else are page content and external linking.

Content, content, content. You may have heard the phrase “Content is King”. That can’t be overstated. Most websites lack quality content. They may have flashy graphics and sound, but none of this will impress the search engines or attract visitors. Quality, text-based content is the only thing the SEs (search engines) really care about on your Web pages. Provide plenty of that and you are on the road to success.

Quality, relevant link exchanges are becoming more important every day. The SEs are placing more emphasis on inbound links in their algorithms, and for good reason. Each inbound link pointing to your site is like a “vote” of confidence in the eyes of the search engines. But not all links are created equal. Links from unrelated sites on completely different topics are almost useless and a waste of your time trying to acquire them. The SEs are looking for relevant, related, quality links from websites in the same niche as yours.

If you’re struggling to get your site ranked well in the search engines or are looking to start a new website, do some research into SEO, on-page optimization, and off-page optimization. There is plenty of free information available to help you get started in the right direction. There are no secrets or magic tricks when it comes to ranking well in the search engines; just honest, quality content with relevant, related linking.

Basic SEO for Dummies

One of the hottest topics on the Internet is that of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). There is no question that optimizing your site to the extent possible is an important function. The operative phrase here, however, is “to the extent possible”. You can burn a whole lot of time and energy trying to follow every last “tip” you get for SEO (nevermind the fact that some of these tips turn out to be contradictory). You can also spend big bucks on those who will claim to increase your PR. Or you can do most of it yourself. In this article. I will explain some of the fundamentals of SEO.

The actual programs that go out and look at all the sites on the web to collect, classify, and rank them for the search engines are called “spiders”. They are also know as “bots”, “crawlers”, and a number of other names. Basically speaking, the spiders look through your site to see what you have. The keys to successfully convincing the bots that your site is “worthy” are simple and straightforward.

CONTENT: First and foremost, it’s all about content. We are talking about text content here; relevant content. Search engines love content rich sites. Flash intro screens may be all the rage, but they tend to be a problem for search engines. They can’t pick up any discernible content from Flash intro screens. Same thing applies to sites that have more graphics than content. Pleasing to look at, but they don’t do anything to help your page ranking. As it relates to SEO, you can actually wind up shooting yourself in the foot by making your site too flashy.

So when you design your site, make sure it includes lots of text-based information. You also want to make sure that the keywords you believe people will search for are used within that text. If at all possible, you also want to have more than just a few pages. A minimum of 20 pages would be my recommendation. Spiders just love to crawl around interconnected pages. A one or two “sales page” might do great in the Traffic Exchanges, but the spiderbots will be left feeling unfulfilled. A great technique is to use the Google or Yahoo keyword selector tools to determine what people are actually searching for. DON’T guess when it comes to this! Use the tool. Most of the time, what you think people are searching for is not reflected in the actual statistics.

Spiders also love “fresh” or new content. Sites that don’t change much tend to lose page ranking. So try to add new content as often as possible. Two great techniques for this are discussion forums and blogs. If you can get other people to participate in your forums and blogs, they in effect, provide content for you on an ongoing basis. Another possibility is to provide RSS feeds on your page related to your business. But forget the javascript based feeds. All they do is provide linkbacks to their sites, not yours. Your best bet is to use a PHP or ASP based RSS feed that puts the content on YOUR page.

META TAGS: Most spiders don’t really pay that much attention to meta tags, but even so, you want to use them. Your Title tag should be short and concise; no more than 60 characters or so. Same thing for the description tag: short, concise, and containing some of your keywords. Maximum length shouldn’t be more than around 160 characters.

We all put our keywords in the keyword meta tags, even though we know that most modern spiders don’t care. But there are things you can do that will hurt more than help. Spiders really don’t like seeing the same keyword over and over. No word should be used as a keyword more than three times. Using “dog grooming” as an example, having your keyword list contain dog, dogs, dog grooming, grooming dogs, dog salon, and so forth is NOT a good idea. This is keyword spamming, which tends to irritate the spiderbots. If you can’t think of a more varied list of words or phrases, then just keep it to a few relevant words. You also want to keep the total character count for keywords to no more than 120 or so.

With the sites that I manage, my experience is that if you use Keyword Meta Tags, each of those keywords should be included in the actual text on your homepage. For example, if your keyword meta tags include “dog grooming”, “dogs”, “pets”, and “pet grooming”, the text content on your homepage should include the same words or phrases. Doing this gives the spiderbots a “warm and fuzzy” feeling that your site is what you claim it to be. It does matter. On the other hand, including numerous words in your meta tags that aren’t in your content is counterproductive. From the standpoint of the bots, it tends to bring into question what your site is really about. Bots like consistency. I saw this recently on a site I used to be associated with. They had 15-20 meta tag keywords that weren’t reflected in the content. Their PR was 2 points below what it should be. I emailed them a few months ago about this and they started to take the advice. Their PR has gone up one point and I expect it will go up another.

KEYWORDS: Keywords are the relevant part of content. As pointed out in the previous paragraph, make SURE you have keywords relevant to your product or service in your content. Don’t guess at this. Use the Google or Yahoo keyword selector tools. Find out what people are actually searching for and then include the words/phrases relevant to your site in your content.

While doing research for an ebook I recently published, I used the example of someone selling homemade candles online. Without using the tools, I came up with a list of what I THOUGHT the relevant keywords would be. I then used the tools to find out what people were actually searching for. Not to my surprise, my “best guess” list was wrong. The number one search in Yahoo related to candles was “yankee candles”. I didn’t even know what that was. Had I just used my own judgement I would have missed the number one search criteria. Use the tools.

If you offer something that some of your competitors don’t, make use of that. For example, if you offer “discounts” for certain items, use that in your keywords. For instance, somewhere in your content you should have the phrase “discount yankee candles”. You will still be in the Google/Yahoo results (somewhere) when someone searches for “yankee candles”, but if you offer discounts, and they search for “discount yankee candles”, your site will come up in the search results significantly. The same thing would apply to words such as “homemade”, “decorative”, “custom”, and so forth. Try to find a competitive advantage that will help cull your site out from the rest.

LINKS: The number of “referral” links you have (links to your site from other sites) is one of the factors considered when determining page ranking. Be aware however, link quality matters. Having people come to your site from cnn.com or ebay.com carries alot more weight than having them come from www.one-eyed-llamas.com. Of course, few of us can get links from CNN, ESPN or eBay, but there are other things you can do to mitigate this. One-way links (those that come to your site without a link to their site) are better than reciprical links (such as those provided by “link exchanges”). For the most part, reciprocal links are essentially worthless.

Submitting articles to high PR rated sites is one way to get the kind of links you want. Besides giving you one-way links, articles submission sites are a good way to generate free traffic to your site. And don’t discount the effect of “classified ad” sites. Many of these sites allow you to post information about your particular product or service for free. As with articles sites, they give you both backlinks and traffic.

Another option you should consider is discussion forums. Whatever your business might me, it is almost guaranteed that there are forums devoted to that topic. Posting in these forums provides both backlinks and potential traffic to your site.

SITE MAP: A site map is nothing more than a page that provides a “road map” to all the other pages on your site. The spiders seem to like this (although there is some debate) because if provides an easy means for them to access all the other pages you have. This can be particularly effective if you have a content-rich site. You can go one step further and generate an XML sitemap on your site for Google or Yahoo. Will they increase your PR?? Hard to say. But as a very smart person (my wife) once told me, it can’t hurt.

CONCLUSION: I can’t guarantee you a PR7 ranking. No one can. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fraud. There are those who will charge you $5000 or more to increase your rankings. Many of these use non-SEO techniques such as AdWords advertising, which is NOT SEO. Or they will have you use non-relevant keywords. Sure, if you include “one eyed llamas” in your content, you are sure to come up on page one of Google when someone searches for that. I wonder how often that happens? But if you use the simple techniques I have listed here, it will most certainly help your ranking. And it won’t cost you a dime.

Search engine submission and Internet marketing

Internet marketing and search engine ranking go side by side. It will be a blunder to ignore one at the cost of another. Why I am emphasizing so much on search engine submission is because I have found webmasters simply overlook the importance of search engine rankings.

The web is the most visited place where online shoppers visit to find products and services they are seeking. This makes search engine presence the single most important craze for Internet marketers, and search engine submission takes care of this. Search engine submission means proper search engine submission. In fact, the visibility of any website in search engines largely depends on the manner in which they have been submitted in search engines.

Internet marketers often tend to go for search engine submission themselves, just in order to save a few hundred dollars. This practice sometimes does good but sometimes turn out to be nothing substantial. Why? It is because the changing rituals of search engine algorithms. You have spent thousands of dollars creating your website and a few thousands more to set up your Internet marketing infrastructure.

Now if you don’t have visitors would it be worth the efforts? On the contrary, a few hundred dollars spent on professional search engine submission experts can guarantee at least proper search engine submission, and a greater visibility of your website. In other words, statistics show that it is worth the investments to pay a professional search engine marketing company to perform professional search engine registration into the primary databases of the top and major high-traffic search engines and directories. The return will be manifold the investment.

When making a decision about which company to use in order to get professional submissions to the major search engines, find one that has a professional linking service. Such an Internet marketing and advertising service will manually and professionally link your website into the primary databases of all of the major search engines and directories. They do this through submitting your website information and keywords to the best search engines. Since literally thousands of other search engines draw results from the top directories and search engines, your online Internet business will populate the results from all of these engines as well.

What is SEO?

SEO is Search Engine Optimization . In this process, with the help of proper techniques we build and optimize a website in a way that it gets well ranked in a search engine. The designing of such web pages require knowledge of HTML, DHTML and CSS. The site is designed using the proper rules and regulations so that the search engines rank the site high. SEO is all about marketing the site in the Internet world with the help of Google , Yahoo ,Msn and all the other search engines ! The right articles ,content and proper link farming will make the site a favorite amongst the search engines.

Every business organization has their website which represents the company in different parts of the world through the internet. Every company has their own category to which they belong to. For example there are Software Development companies, BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies, Offshore Development Companies, etc. We search on Google for a particular key phrase and we get the listing of the relevant sites. If we search with the key phrase as “Offshore Software Development Company, India ” in GOOGLE it will display the search results for it. Ever thought why even though certain sites that look and feel good are not listed high on the search results . This is because the sites listed higher have a successful SEO campaign carried on the website. Users normally do not go to the 2 nd or third page of the search results. The probability of the user selecting the top search results is high is evident. Very rarely do users visit the 3 rd or 4 th page of the results. SEO in simple words is building a website in such a way that it is ranked well on a search engine. There is lengthy process involved in preparing or starting a SEO campaign on the website.

Why SEO ?

The WEB has become the best platform to sell, buy and display. A company which makes TOYS can sell toys to different parts of the world. People have been buying from e-Bay, Amazon for more than 10 years. The concept of e-Shopping has really picked up well with customers. SEO essentially ranks your website well in the search engine results. Bringing your site on the first page of Google will definitely bring traffic to your site. Getting more traffic will bring you more customers and eventually more business. There is no point in having a commercial site which does not get listed high on the search page of the search engines. A commercial or a business site always has one goal, which is customers. Carrying a good SEO campaign on your website is the key to success.

Steps for a successful SEO campaign:-

1) Keywords: Keywords are the words which the user will search in the search engine to find your company. Find the specific and relevant words that match your website subject and category. Keywords also have variations. A user could type “ofshore company ” to search for offshore company. Search engines hate repetition or stuffing of keywords.

2) Content and Articles: Any site needs to be rich in the content. Visitors come and read the content on the site. The content should be very informative. Setting up a BLOG on your site is one such idea. Search engines love the pages that are updated frequently. So, a blog satisfies this condition.

The Basics of Search Engine Optimization in Internet Marketing

Search engine optimization is a class of interrelated techniques that serve to increase the positioning of a web site in the search results of the major internet search engines. Since most users find the information that they need via the major search engines such as those provided by Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and AOL, the rank of the internet site in the search engine results is a very important factor in determining how many web surfers will find and view the page.

There are a number of techniques that can be employed when using search engine optimization. One of the primary ways that web masters use search engine optimization is to increase the number and placement of key words on the web site that customers are likely to use when searching for goods and services offered by the web site. Many search engines index a page based on key word phrases and oftentimes add value if the key word appears within a certain concentration range. The caveat here is that many search engines will lower the web page ranking if the keyword appears too many times since this is perceived as an attempt to fool the search engine. Keyword search engine optimization uses not only keyword concentration but also keyword placement. Many search engines place higher emphasis on key word phrases that are placed in web page titles and HTML header tags.

Another method of SEO is to increase the number of links to the web site being optimized. Most search engine companies design their algorithms with the assumption that a page that is highly linked to is more likely to offer quality content then one that has no links to it. Many web masters took advantage of this assumption by using link exchange programs to increase the number of links to their site. For this reason, many search engines now devalue two way links in favor of one way links. This means that a major goal of modern search engine optimization is the creation and maintenance of one way links.

Since one of the main goals of the search engine optimization specialist is to increase the number of one way links, a number of methods have been developed to accomplish this goal. One great way to create one way links is to provide testimonials on web sites. These testimonials will often feature a link to the testimonial provider’s web site. Another way to create one way links is to make postings on internet message boards and include the web page URL in the signature line.

Search engine optimization is a vital component of any internet marketing strategy. By positioning a web page to rank highly in search engine results, it is possible to increase the number of visitors to the web site.

Google’s Penalty – Pagerank 0 – PR0

As a part of the fight for the quality of search results, the Google search engine started to penalize websites that use invalid site promotion techniques. The penalty applies to a specific webpage or at times to an entire website.

PageRank 0 – PR0 When a certain page is penalized, its PageRank decreases to 0. This is referred to by professionals as PR0, and I shall also refer to it so further below.

The main signal of a penalty is when a webpage, a group of pages or an entire website that had a positive PR in the past suddenly has a PR0 – this can happen as a result of modifications that were made by the site’s owner to the webpages, or changes in Google’s algorithm that is searching for invalid site promotion techniques.

In order to learn how to check a webpage’s PR, please refer to our PageRank article.

How does Google discover invalid site promotion techniques? The search engines (allegedly) use three main methods to expose rebellious websites:

Automatic Flagging Google’s robot searches for some of the evident promotion techniques that are invalid. When a robot encounters such an incident, it will “put up a red flag”. User Reported Websites Search engines enable (and even encourage) users to report usage of invalid promotion techniques. If you encounter a website that uses this technique, you can report it to Google via a special page dedicated to reporting websites using invalid techniques (spam). Forums This technique may not be official, but it seems that the people from Google read site owners’ forums, and when they stumble upon a site that does not play a fair game, they take action. Reporting a website that uses spam techniques: Google Spam Report:http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html

How do you receive a pardon? The PR0 penalty is usually automatic, meaning that once the search engine recognizes use of invalid optimization techniques, it will activate the penalty without human intervention. Innocent webpages may be harmed this way, but this is the only way Google can deal with the number of pages that exist in its cache. However, an automatic penalty will last a fixed time (30 days), and when the problem is fixed, there is a good chance that the page will return to its previous status.

In cases of a manual penalty or a significant deviation from site promotion norms, it is possible that the penalty will apply for a long period of time, up to a permanent penalty. Even when the domain expires and someone else purchases it, he will discover that he can’t appear in Google.

The meaning of PR0 penalty PR0 webpages are not completely removed from search results, but suffer a substantial harm to their placement in search results, which, in competitive fields, is the same as being deleted.

Why a PR0 penalty is applied There are many opinions on this subject because of the lack of information on behalf of Google on this subject. The only way to understand the way the penalty works is by examining the common features of all penalized pages.

Following are the main reasons that can result in PR0 that is not a penalty:

A new webpage Before you panic, it is quite possible that a page received a PR0 only because it was uploaded after the last PR update. Checking the domain without “www” If you perform a PR check of a page with the “www” removed from the domain’s name (check “domain.com” instead of www.domain.com, then you might definitely see a PR0 for this page. There is a difference in Google’s eyes between “www.domain.com/page.htm” and “domain.com/page.htm”. A temporary Google malfunction This may also happen quite frequently, when Google does not return the PR fast enough, or can’t return it all because of a technical problem, it will be displayed as PR0 on the toolbar. Dynamic Pages When pages are created dynamically, Google may treat them as new webpages, and give them a PR0 as a result. No links to the page The page is an “orphan”: there are no links pointing to it. This can sometimes be a result of linking through Flash. There are several techniques that are considered as invalid site promotion techniques or spam as they are called professionally. Using these techniques may result in a PR0 penalty for a page or an entire website.

For additional information regarding invalid site promotion techniques, please refer to the Spam – Invalid Site Promotion Techniques article.

Does a link from a page with PR0 harm the target page? The answer is no. If this was the case, a war would have started on the Internet, with site owners linking to their competitors to damage them. In addition, a site owner has no control over his incoming links, only his outbound ones.

Links from websites with PR0 are neither harmful nor useful with regards to your page’s PR calculation, but on the other hand, the page that links to you may have received a temporary PR0, therefore a link from that page may turn into a good investment in the future.

You should avoid linking from your site to PR0 pages: since you do have control over this type of action, it may result in a penalty.

The Google Sand Box Effect

The sand box theory is a name given by website promoters to an unexplained phenomenon that started affecting Google’s search results around the middle of 2004. This event’s main characteristics are: a new site that was submitted lately and appeared for the first time on Google’s search results a short time ago. For the first period, the website will be placed well in the search results, but after a certain period, this website simply disappears from the search results for a long time. This phenomenon is called the “sand box”.

It is important to emphasize that this relates only to new sites and not new pages on existing sites.

Who is affected by the sand box effect? The sand box effect affects websites that were submitted as of March 2004. This effect is not influenced by the site’s pagerank, the webpages’ optimization level, the number of incoming links or the amount of the relevant quality information on site. The sand box effect does not depend on certain categories or search words. It can happen to any new website.

It appears that coming out of the sand box is done in groups. We had a good example of a massive coming out of the sand box on February 2005 during a major Google update at that time.

The complete nondifferentiation of this phenomenon results in the assumption that this effect is a result of Google’s algorithm.

How to fight the sand box effect? Since it’s clear that the above effect has to do with a site’s age, we can say the following two things:

It’s better to optimize an existing website than create a new one. If you are still in need of a new site (that has a new domain), upload several pages to it in the early development stages and make sure that these pages are scanned by Google. Simultaneously, start getting incoming links to your site. This way you can add the website’s development duration to its age. It looks like aside from the abovementioned, all there is left to do is perform good site promoting actions, so that when your site comes out of the sand box, it will directly appear in a high placement.

Possible explanations for the sand box effect There are several explanations for the sand box effect, but all of them remain as a theory in light of the absolute silence kept by the Google people. The big problem in finding an explanation for this phenomenon is that this effect prevents “good” sites from appearing, and by this it actually lowers the quality of the search results. Then, it’s clear that this effect has to do with a website’s age, but the question that remains is why?

My opinion on the subject (and it is only an opinion) is that the goal of this effect is to prevent “meteor” websites that soar up the search results by massive links purchase. My opinion is that the waiting period is not because of the website, but rather because of its incoming links. This way, a new link to a webpage enters a waiting period until it begins to have an effect. New websites have only new links, so they are the ones that suffer the hardest.

How does this effect harm links sellers? Consider the notion that you have to buy links from a website that sell links, to pay a great amount of money for it, and not know when this link will begin yielding results.

Internet Marketing or Seo Experts – A new profession!

Everyone wants a successful web site, one that pops up on Google. To get there you need an Internet Marketing Professional or a SEO expert.

If few years back someone would say i am a SEO graduate and want some work, you would have just get rid of him but nowadays there is a growing trend of SEO graduates being recognised accepted by the industry. What has caused this steer and what is the reason behind this, lets have a look at it.

First of all, who are SEO graduates?

Thats the main question, any new businessman who does not have an in depth knowledge of E-commerce would ask. Well SEO graduates can be anyone from Internet designers, marketers, advertising departments to all of them rolled into one. So from this it can be seen that it is not so tough to become an SEO expert. Well as far as my experience goes, it does take some time to learn the methods and tricks to top the Search Engines but its way easier then any other job on earth. All though you may require lot of time and tries but its what makes this profession interesting, its vulnerability. Since everything depends on the algorithms of search engines, you can never be assured that you will get the results you expect. Being said that, this is all about trial and error method. Some may speculate this, but in my opinion, its the truth.

Secondly, Why is SEO and SEO expert required for my business?

Well, this is a most important thing you should consider before starting any of the businesses. SEO works your site to the top of search engines. This will bring you immense amount of traffic to your site which may be providing ‘x’ products and services, as in any business, its all about your visibility, the more your are on top in search rankings , more your are visible and hence successful in business. For example purposes I will take my two sites Mobile Addict and Humour Site. Mobile Addict has been around for while, in my early days of SEO, so it was really my learning playground and now is PR5. What do I gain from it, viewership to site which is around 300 uniques just from search engines daily. While on other hand , Humour Inc has been around for just a month and now has good rankings and a future pr5. This helps in gaining popularity as well as priceless visitors for your business.

Internet marketers who are SEO experts can earn unlimited amounts of money quickly and easily since they can not only come up with a business idea, but they can execute each step along the way. This makes them the most important part of any organisations success provided that organisation is e-commerce related which most of the organisations nowadays are.It is not easy to hire one of these web guru’s, their time is usually booked up months ahead of time. They usually charge huge amounts of money for their skill, and rightly so. After all, what is a top spot on Yahoo worth anyway?

At last, all things being said and done, i would add that it is a relatively new concept where a specialist – the SEO – forces a web page to the top of search results. The typical SEO will take hours to find the right keywords, carefully placing them into web copy for maximum search results.

Internet marketing professional Zane Durant said, “I have to work on some of our clients web sites every day to keep up with their competition. To be on top today your SEO must tweak things constantly, updating keywords, adding pages, news, etc. If you do that, you can guarantee a top position on search engines.”

I completely agree to his point, as its new and unique concept, its demand in new generation would be more. It is good to see that finally the internet marketing era has came to this age. More and more seminars and conferences are being held worldwide regarding this new field of expertisation. Even the colleges has recognised this new trend and have slowly but steadily accepting this new field of expertise. With lot of sites coming up day by day and competition and market share becoming more and more important, this Internet Marketing experts , with all their expertise and time, with affirmation of top results, stand by you to make your business success.

Where all it takes to be on top is Internet Marketing Expert.

ack in 1994 after you created a website for your business, marketing was fairly simple. Generally you would make changes to your HTML code for search engine optimization and for the most part promoted your website through offline methods. These may have included business cards, letterhead, print advertising and other such methods. Whether or not your site was listed on the only search engine, Yahoo, at the time was purely based on how well you optimized our web pages. If you did a good job then multiple pages of your site would be listed consecutively for a search.

Twelve years later in 2006 the entire perspective of marketing your site on the web has become a science requiring a degree. Although, we are all eager to market our website on the web we are somewhat unclear how to accomplish this task through a maze of policies set by the Big 3 search engines – Google, MSN and Yahoo. Most businesses would first seek out professional advice. In the process of seeking professional Internet Marketing advice, your story may look something like this.

“By now I had heard about pay-per-click, something called Ad Sense, link exchanges, banner advertising and it all sounds quite confusing. After all as a business owner, my forte is to run my company, not try and figure out how to market a website on the Internet. As I seek out professional advice I get quite a variety of different stories. One person calls themselves Internet marketer and the only thing they provide is Pay-Per-Click advertising campaigns. The next person I speak to also consider their business to be in Internet Marketing, yet the only service provided is Search Engine Optimization. Even that term was somewhat vaguely defined to me. I continue to hear about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but it seems to vary from changes to our website to advertising on the web. I am most definitely puzzled at this point. Can anyone describe what Internet Marketing is actually about?”

Advertising and Marketing has always been handled by professional firms that have college educated individuals and understand the difference between Advertising and Marketing. In case you are wondering, here are the definitions of Advertising and Marketing.

- Marketing is the process or technique of promotion, selling and distributing a product or service.

- Advertising is to make your product or service publicly known; an announcement to call public attention by emphasizing qualities to arouse a desire to purchase.

One of the primary issues of advertising and marketing on the Internet is that you may not necessarily reach someone educated in the field of advertising and marketing. Instead it is someone that has educated themselves about a particular area of Internet Marketing. For instance they may have specialized in Affiliate Marketing or Pay-Per-Click campaigns while another individual may know more about making changes to your website for search engine optimization. Currently these types of services are fragmented and they do require someone with the appropriate skills to manage an entire Internet marketing campaign.

If we take a look at all the different areas of Internet marketing you will find the following in your list:

Research, Analysis, Planning and Strategy We need to research key phrases and look at the data to determine our title and description.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) I believe it is safe to say that SEO is not advertising on the web. SEO is strictly modifications to your HTML code and website. Making sure your website is HTML validated, density checks, the keywords, phrases, content, alt descriptions, anchor titles and so on are in place for the entire website.

Internet Marketing This is the actual process of promotion as the definition of marketing was described earlier. Some would call this Natural Propagation Marketing, others will call it Organic marketing. With this form of marketing you can rest assured the shelf life of the efforts put forth can be measured in years.

Internet Advertising Although, the shelf life of Internet advertising can be measured in seconds and can hemorrhage a business financially, there are three areas of Internet advertising. The first would be to utilize an Internet Advertising Network (IAN) to submit a variety of banners through out a variety of websites in order to narrow your advertising to an area with the most response. Another area is Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns such as Google Ad Sense or Yahoo Search Marketing. Lastly, you may consider direct advertising on websites that you have found to be of value to your business with high page ranking.

Management & Reporting It is necessary to monitor all the various activities you are pursuing on the web. Internet marketing gives us the ability to measure almost all aspects of our advertising and marketing campaigns with the push of a button. You will want to keep an eye on your website statistics, check your Google page rank, your Alexa traffic ranking, and your link popularity overall to name a few.

If we consider all the various parts that are required for proper business Internet marketing, you will find the industry moving towards consolidation in the future. Equally, we will find that advertising and marketing on the web will eventually fall back to educated professionals who not only understand advertising and marketing, but will now include their education in Internet marketing as well.

When you are deciding on the major search engine directories that you want your website to be listed in, you should not overlook one of the most important ones: the DMOZ (short form for Directory Mozilla). DMOZ is just another name for the Open Directory Project, one of the human-powered submission directories. The Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.org) was designed and is currently operated by a volunteer group of web editors and reviewers.

It will not cost you a dime to get listed on DMOZ but before you submit your website to the Open Directory Project for review, you will need to be certain it is developed with DMOZ standards in mind. You will need to go through all of your web pages to make sure that your website is elegant and professional.

Your website design should be already completed at the time you make the submission. That means that the design of every single web page should be finished. Unfinished websites will be rejected. Also make sure that your website contains valuable and relevant information or your website will get rejected.

One of the benefits of being listed with the Open Directory Project is that your website will sooner or later appear in other search engines like Google and Yahoo. This happens because the DMOZ listings are used by numerous search engines and directories, including Google.

The submission process is relatively uncomplicated. Your first step is to visit the website of Open Directory Project: http://www.dmoz.org. You will be able to select a category and subcategories for your website and add your website’s URL. Make sure that you selected the correct category and subcategory. Incorrect selection may result in longer waiting period or rejection. Also read and follow the provided instructions and requirements very carefully

The title and description that you submit should be carefully prepared and reviewed to make sure they accurately describe the content and the main theme of your website. If DMOZ editors will disagree with your description or title, they can either change it or completely reject your website.

It may take some time (sometimes 6 months or more …) before your website will show up in the Open Directory Project. However, do not resubmit your website during the waiting period as this can only result in a longer delay or get your website rejected. Be patient and regularly check the status of your submission by doing the search on DMOZ. If your website does not get listed for a long period of time or gets rejected, you can also check on the status of the submission or the reasons for the rejection by contacting the editors for the subcategory that you selected.

By Jakob Jelling www.sitetube.com

In the age of fair competition you may find it hard to believe that a search engine may hinder the appearance of a new website. This is what is currently believed to be happening on more web servers today. Some programmers have viewed Google as uncomfortable to rank newer websites until they have proven their viability to exist for more than a period of “x” months. Thus the term “Sandbox Effect” applies to the idea that all new websites have their ratings placed in a holding tank until such time is deemed appropriate before a ranking can commence.

However the website is not hindered as much as the links that are reciprocated from other users. Newer links that are created are put on a “probationary” status until again they pickup in rank from other matured sites or placed directly by an ad campaign. The idea behind the hindrance is to prevent a fast ranking to occur on a new website. The usual holding period seems to be between 90 and 120 days before a site would start obtaining rank from reciprocal or back linking.

Some advice has been given to have companies you are going to reciprocate back add your link first to the website. This may help grandfather your site in, thus reducing the waiting time associated with “new” websites. People have noticed a 0 page rank when first signing up and receiving a bolstering 7 page ranking after 4 months. Why the delay? The fact is, that if people realized how easy it would be to get a high ranking, would that take away the credibility of the engine. It depends on whom you ask, but it does seem to be happening frequently to newer subscribers. Do not discontinue back linking, your rank will eventually appear.

What is PageRank?

By Jakob Jelling www.sitetube.com

Chances are you have been on the Internet and have been surfing in and out of websites looking for valuable information pertaining to a favorite topic or researching a subject for school or work. As you type in keyword(s) you match the information you are searching for on Google, you come up with 10,000 pages of information. It’s virtually impossible to go through every one, so you refine your search by adding more exclusive keywords. Voila the number of pages reduces to around 1,000. Still this is a lot of pages, but you start looking through the information to find what you want.

As you go through the first 10 links on the page, WHAM! The information you needed to find was in the first or second in order of PageRank. You wonder how did they get such a high rank on Google? You may think it was very expensive to get that site at the top of the heap. The funny thing is, with a little know how and about $75 you too can go for the top.

Search Engine Optimization or “SEO”, has become a standard in the web design industry, every customer of a good web designer wants to be number one in their keyword and may be willing to pay the extra money to get there. A good web designer will dress up a web sites home page to match the requirements of their client on specific keywords. The client will also pay more for the exclusivity to remain there untouched. SEO has become a niche for a lot of web companies. They know if they can get the company to the top fast, the word of mouth will be helpful toward their business.

Through specialized META tags (hidden group of keywords) the web designer will strategically place keywords multiple times in the title bar, keywords, and even as hidden text. Some search engines have figured these tricks of the trade out and have banned certain websites from their indexes. Google has become the engine of choice for a lot of people today. There is a different logic Google uses to calculate page rank and keywords is only a portion of it.

Google actually uses a specialized mathematical equation to place your site in a predetermined order. First things first, if your website is a keyword, that does not automatically give you a top spot. It will take time to move up the ranks and you should register with Google as soon as possible to drive your rank upwards. But just having the right URL (Universal Resource Locator) doesn’t guarantee the top spot either. You must also be swapping or reciprocating links with other Google users. The more you use Google websites that are indexed the faster and higher your site will go in the ranks.

A Google robot will visit your site frequently so continue to modify your code and keep checking its rank and status. Eventually, your site will drive up the ranks and land on top. It may take time and work, but you will get the hang of keeping it there once you employ the right mix of keywords with links. Some companies can charge up to $1,000 for the top spot, they employ the same techniques, even though they don’t want you to know this. Keep your META tags, title, keywords and content in line with your keywords and continuously look to optimize them. Under no circumstances take another persons keywords off of their code; this is potentially dangerous as you could be violating copyright laws.

Good Luck!!!

Drive Traffic To Your Website Using The Right Keywords

Search engines are the #1 tool people use when shopping for products, services or information online. Optimize your website with the proper keywords or keyword phrases for your content and watch your traffic explode. If you gain an understanding of how to properly promote your website your efforts will reach it’s full potential.

To rank relevantly within search engine results, each website must be considered relevant to a particular search algorithm for a given keyword or phrase. Keyword selection can be a challenge to both experts and neophytes. While anyone can come up with various words that may be used when searching for their product or service, these words may not be the ideal mix for search engine ranking. Why? If a marketer chooses a popular keyword phrases, he or she and a million other businesses compete for top placement. Top SERP placement is dense, searchers typically giving up after the first three pages. To succeed, one must use relevant keywords that are not being used by everyone else and that are searched for quite often. This may include misspellings and other alternative data. After finding relevant keywords and phrases, the results must encourage conversion or success based on each business’ criteria. For example, while it may be possible for a DVD rental firm to get top listings under the search criteria “free DVD rentals”, the person who visits is looking for free merchandise and will leave if its not found.

For optimal search engine rankings, a page will be optimized for only one to two popular but non-competitive keywords or keyword phrases.

Keyword Coding

HTML coding are two words most people never want to hear, especially in a learning environment. But it’s important to understand the basic web page header structure and where the search engines look to find key words for search engine ranking pages (SERP).

Sites rank highest when each page is optimized separately. For instance, a business may have one website with unlimited interlinking pages. The top page must be named “index.HTML.” While each sub-page may be named according to the designer or programmer’s preference. Ideally sub-pages are named according to the strongest keywords or phrases for each business. Both the domain name and the URL or complete web address string, are important factors in determining search engine relevancy

Three important META tags are on each individual HTML page located between the “head” tags: description, keywords and title. The webpage description is the short sentence that displays after the listing name is the SERP’s. The keywords are not viewed by the casual surfer, but offer a clear-cut description of what is found on the website or who’s behind it. The title is the most condensed of all metatags. The title should repeat the top 1-2 keywords and describe what the site is about.

We can take the keyword theme as far as necessary, yet success through search engine optimization is not a 100% guaranteed way to gain top rankings and can often dilute the site and information quality by becoming a string of repetitive keywords, not value-added information. Some of these tactics include adding pages of keyword-rich articles solely to rank high. Another is developing a mini-empire of interrelated sites not for expert information, but solely to make the sites appear more important and relevant to the main site focus.

To ensure a small 30-page website is optimized, it must first renew keyword use each month to find the most popular terms for the three major search engines, Yahoo!, Google and MSN. Each page must be optimized for different but interdependent terms to strengthen the site as a whole. This involves new keyword research and website content for each page every month.

An example of a good ecommerce site using paid advertising instead of keyword optimization is buy http://automotive.com. Notice the content is relevant to the visitor entering and seeking the product. In contract, auto http://anything.com, a competitor site, relies heavily on keyword content, uses text that has no purpose and confuses the visitor with too many navigation links and useless words meant for search engines alone. Though this may gain rankings with work and keyword saturation, it can also damage a business reputation and ultimately lead to less sales.

Needless to say there are far more aspects to choosing the right keywords than I can cover in this article but the information provided here should give you a good insight into understanding how important it is to design a website that is keyword friendly.

Let’s face it, there is no magic bullet when it comes to successfully promoting your online business. There are pros and cons to almost everything you do. If you never develop a plan and put that plan into motion, you’ll never know if that’s the plan that will ultimately be the “magic bullet” that launches your online business to new found success.

Do give up! If at first you don’t succeed, TRY, TRY, AGAIN! There is a lot to learn when starting a online business. Give yourself a break and don’t set unrealistic goals. Contrary to popular beliefs, having a successful, profit making, online business doesn’t happen overnight.
